17 Aug. 1968 GBR. London. 08:00. 1176 kHz MW. The first broadcast of Radio Free London [RFL] takes place from a flat in Kensington, in support of the rally at Trafalgar square. Police get rather annoyed when it is relayed over the loudspeakers! The broadcast features several ex-offshore DJs. The station is raided by the GPO, at 17:20 who confiscate [steal] a dummy transmitter. The real one, bought from a pair of radio amateurs, is concealed in a loudspeaker. The ‘Crystal’ is a crystal Bakelite case, with a rolled-up piece of paper instead of a crystal with a rude message to the GPO written on it.

On This Day…
August 19… The day that in 1989 Radio Caroline is raided by Dutch and English authorities, the transmitters are being smashed up when the Caroline tender arrives, with DJ Dave the Fish on board whereupon they leave, one of the DTI officials leaving his glasses behind. The DTI later deny being on board, and say the raid was entirely by Dutch authorities. The MW transmitter is totally destroyed, but they leave the 50KW Short-Wave transmitter unmolested because the tender has arrived. The main reason why this happens is due to broadcasts of a religious service from the vessel going out on 6215 kHz, a dedicated Marine emergency channel! [Why it was felt necessary to destroy the MW transmitter remains obscure.] As Ronan O Rahilly pointed out “if you board a vessel in international waters, you are committing an act of piracy”
Anyway, apologies for the digression, but it is in context for today’s date… On to Land Based stations..

[With Simon no longer with us, the only engineer was also no longer with us, and his relatives had got a large skip and thrown most of his stuff in it before putting the house up for sale. Only one oscilloscope had been recovered from that skip and it was faulty]. Bill Lyons then drives to Saltash and collects the 1494 kHz rig from the closed down Radio Argus Plymouth service, and brings it back to Jane’s new place where the broadcasts are to come from. He is to then walk away from the station for a while.
