On this day 9 July / 10 July

09 Jul. 1985
+ GBR. Ilford. 104.7 FM. 8 pm to midnight. The first broadcast of Radio Argus takes place; DJs are James Halstead, Bill Lyons, Pete Davis and Bert Bridges, from whose room the broadcast takes place. The name has been decided after reading a book that states that while Mercury was the messenger of the gods, he had a ‘journalist’ with a thousand eyes, called Argus. In view of the way the licensed Radio Mercury treated the free station, Radio Jackie, which has only recently been forced to close down due to actions by Mercury and their dti friends, Radio Argus seems the most fitting name. Mercury would thus be deprived of the source of all his information, and have nothing to tell the gods, if Argus went on strike! The rig drifts in frequency, gets very hot, and makes strange noises. Possibly because the aerial is formed from a copper pipe on the outside of the building, cut through top and bottom and held in place with plastic sections to make a hidden dipole in plain sight. It is decided to suspend broadcasts until an engineer can be found.
09 Jul. 1986 GBR. Camborne. 103.0 FM. Alterations take place to Radio Argus’ programming. Weekday night broadcasts are cut back and weekend broadcasts are extended, 19:00-02:00.
09 Jul. 1989 GBR. Bromley. Unaware of problems in Cornwall, Radio Argus London celebrates its fourth birthday, with a simulcast. The builder has turned up with a rig on 92.0 FM. It’s only about a few watts, but for the rest of the day, the celebrations go on, on both 1611kHz MW and 92.0 FM. [And the SW sprog!] RFM is not relayed today
GBR. London. 94.3 FM. RFM is on air today

Radio Argus Cornwall is on air today, in an attempt to improve the late evening service, continuous music and jingles go out 11:00-14:00, the DJ thus displaced [Sid Jackall] gets the ‘graveyard shift’, something he rather enjoys!
