+ GBR. Cornwall. A caller to a BBC Radio Cornwall phone in announces the Radio Argus Cornwall transmitter site. This person was later found to be an Impact Radio DJ. This was to prove the start of a prolonged battle between Argus and Impact.

+ GBR Cornwall. 1602 kHz MW rig fails today, Radio Argus Cornwall continues on 1503 kHz [St Ives and 102.8 FM [St Agnes]. It is found that someone had cut the aerial at St Dennis causing the rig to fail. To avoid confusion, the 103.1 FM service at Newquay is to start calling itself the Radio Argus Atlantic Coast Service from today, its hours are to be clarified as weekday evenings and as many hours as possible at weekends.

+ GBR Cornwall. 1503 kHz [St Ives] and 102.8 FM [St Agnes] Radio Argus Cornwall changes a few other sites round today, as Pete threatened Simon, it is decided to move the 1602 kHz MW rig to St Dennis, thus only the link would come from Simon’s place. 103.1 FM from Newquay is off air as the person there is not sure who is running the station. He is reassured, but decides to site the rig off his property. The link from Camborne is not strong enough to give a good enough signal to be relayed, and in any event the link receiver intended for Newquay is now needed for the St Dennis rig. Programmes are rearranged, and the overnight service is largely taped music with jingles, Pete and his four associates have caused chaos to the DJ roster.

The expansion of services, and new staff joining Radio Argus Cornwall mean that it is potentially possible to start a county wide service, with local opt-outs. An on-air meeting is held to discuss the plans with a live phoneline for listeners’ contributions and suggestions. However, Pete Davis becomes very drunk and abusive, insulting everybody who disagrees with him. When he insists on the station name being changed he is sacked. He walks out, taking four DJs with him. The live programme is suspended and a taped show hurriedly goes out.

02 Jul. 1966 GBR. London. The British government publishes the Marine etc., Broadcasting [Offences] Bill, which will make unlicensed broadcasts from ships and Marine structures illegal. Supplying or advertising of (and on) such stations will also be illegal.

02 Jul. 2000 GBR. Ramsgate harbour. On 1575 kHz MW. A test broadcast is made of Laser from Dave the Fish’s boat, using the Argus (ex-Jackie) rig, while Dave’s is being repaired. Further broadcasts follow, with reception noted in Suffolk and Belgium. This is possibly the only time a Radio Jackie built rig has seen offshore use. The aerial is a ‘birds’ nest’ between two masts, and the earth is a wire attached to two dan buoys over the side in the water.

I have no problem with posting this as Dave the Fish is now safe from the dti/ofcom, having sadly passed away, he was behind a lot of the tenders for the free Radio Caroline, ran his own station [yet another Laser] 🙂 and did shows for Argus as well as others. RIP Dave, you did a great job.
