The Jolly Roger is great on the Cork scene, ditto Radio Blaa Blaa on the Waterford stations. Eddie Bohan’s A Century of Irish Radio 1900 -2000 is an absolute beast of a book. All three should still be available…

Welcome to August!
Below are some August items that I have no exact dates for between 1970 and 1989. If someone could put more precise dates it would be appreciated. But if not, I hope this proves of interest
Aug. 1971
* GBR London. 201m MW, [1492 kHz]. Radio Nelson by now is using a 50-60 watt rig with the 160 watt rig in reserve; the Sunday rundown now is: – 10:00-11:00 Libby Caroline [the 2nd], 11:00-12:00 Allan Ross, 12:00-13:00 Henry Morgan [the 2nd].
Aug. 1975
* FIN. The Free Radio League cancels the membership of Radio Back Woods and another station, Radio Universal for having Nazi sympathies. This is confirmed in November, when a letter from Radio Universal ends in the words ‘Heil Hitler!’
Aug. 1978
* NED. Noted this month on SW by Peter Verbruggen who is to go on to start Free Radio Service Holland [FRSH] in 1980: –
Radio Viking
Sunshine Radio
Radio Corsair,
Skyport Radio
ABC Europe
European Music Radio, which puts out a good signal with only 10 watts
Aug. 1979
* NED. Peter Verbruggen, joins European Music Radio [EMR], and presents their Dutch service this month, before going on to set up Free Radio Service Holland [FRSH].
* GBR. West Midlands. Radio Active starts broadcasting on MW in this month. Another station on 227 m run by Steve Merrick, also starts, replaying old Radio Jackie tapes. The two eventually merge, and on 1248 kHz a joint station emerges with 100 watts called Radio 242.
Aug. 1983
* GBR London. 1188 kHz MW. South East Sound is raided in this month; the station has previously been called Radio 220 and Southern Radio and presenters include Ian Johnston, Ray Adams, Geoff Rogers, formerly on Radio Jackie, Keith Archer and Benny James, formerly on Voice of Peace.
Aug. 1984
* GBR. Wolverhampton. 103.5 FM. Mad Mike Harris joins UK Radio.
* GBR. Liverpool. Radio Atlantis disappears from the air for a while
Aug. 1985
* GBR. Wolverhampton. In this month, Paul Johnson is tipped off as to where the dti official who raided UK Radio lives. Paul finds out his phone number from Directory Enquiries, and phones him up, threatening revenge. Then he orders a skip of manure to be dumped in his front garden… Over the next 5 months, Paul is to send taxis and fire engines to this official’s address.
* GBR. West Midlands. Sounds Alternative closes this month, and some of the DJs re-join County Radio
* NED. By now, Radio Torenvalk is broadcasting on several frequencies, including 1094, 1323, 1327, 1508, 1566 and 1625 kHz. With operators Hans and Uncle Jan., the station works together with Radio Orang Utang, Radio Blackhunter and Radio Arena.

* GBR. London. London Greek Radio, which has already been raided 100 times, scores a legal precedent this month, when the landlord of their broadcast site is busted and fined £1250. This means that the station has to find a new transmitter site.
* GBR. London. 93.0 FM. Alices Restaurant is noted this month
Aug. 1987
* NED. Superclan Radio agrees to relay FRSH, which had been without a relay since Radio Delmare’s raid
