Hi everyone.
The first of the month means I have a few facts that need dates putting to them and maybe frequencies and so on.
All the following are events that happened in Septembers 1970-1989, if someone could put a more precise date, frequency etc to these I would be very grateful.
On This Day will follow later in the day after I have had some sleep, night shifts tend to take it out of me 🙂
Sep. 1970
* GBR. Southend- on- Sea, Essex.1327 kHz MW. On 226 metres, Radio Kaleidoscope starts broadcasts. After several broadcasts however, the station closes down, playing ‘Walk on by’ by Dionne Warwick.
Can someone point me to more information, or just tell me? dates, frequencies, anything else
Sep. 1976
* GBR. London. Radio Concord puts out a programme discussing Malcolm X. It is raided after this. As a result, Radio Jackie, which had recently broadcast a drug story, decides to stick to music broadcasts.
Can someone give more details, such as the date of the raid and when this particular broadcast went out?
Sep. 1977
* FIN. 6235 kHz SW. Radio Flamingo moves to a new SW channel, and the signal gets out better, covering most of Scandinavia.
* GBR. London. 92.4 FM. Radio Invicta is to start Sunday broadcasts which run through to 1981
This is more about dates than anything, Did Invicta start Sunday Broadcasts on the first Sunday of January or was it a bit later on?
And does anyone know when Radio Flamingo changed frequency?
Sep. 1979
* GBR. Birmingham. 1242 kHz MW. Radio Free Birmingham [RFB] [RFB] starts broadcasts, run by Steve Meriks.
* GBR. Wolverhampton. 1332 kHz MW. UK Radio’s new studios open, but disagreements start between Doug Neilson and David Jarvis, culminating in Doug leaving the station, taking the FM rig with him. Paul Johnson starts experimenting with the old MW rig, and eventually gets a booster, to increase it to 10 watts but from now, apart from these tests, UK Radio is off the air until next year.
* GBR. East London. 1611 kHz MW. Around this time, ABC Radio starts broadcasts. These last into the winter, when it is closed following a major raid, resulting in the convictions of two staff members.
* NED. Work starts on Peter Verbruggen’s station’s new transmitter. Engineer, Bobby Speed working with EMR’s founder Barry Stephens start work. The planned station’s name is to become Free Radio Service Holland [FRSH].
Again, I need dates for these, if anyone can help?
Sep. 1980
* GBR. London. In this Month, Phoenix Radio is to close, although it will be reincarnated and ‘rise from the ashes’ in 1982, some members will go on to form Comsat radio while others will form Alices Restaurant
Ideally the date of the last broadcast would be useful here?
Sep. 1982
* GBR. Colchester. 90.4 FM. Garry Lee buys a 2-watt rig, and goes on air as Radio East, moving to 90.6 to get away from the BBC Radio 3 channel soon after.
More dates if possible, this one is probably a long shot
Sep. 1983
* GBR. Colchester. Radio East appears in the local press, with a 3/4-page feature.
* GBR. Wolverhampton. Following poor response to its Saturday service UK Radio closes down. By this time, County Radio is using the 94.4 channel every Sunday so the UK Radio team start works on a new 103.5 FM rig. The antics of County Radio manager, Steve Merike, who seems to be living on alcohol, is to cause staff to leave, including Rod Lucas and Kelvin Scott.
I would like to get more dates here; I have gone through a few websites but only seem to get general details
Sep. 1984
* GBR. Wolverhampton. UK Radio publishes its first newsletter; this leads to more letters of support, some of which, instead of going to the station go to the local press… This attracts the dti.
* GBR. Colchester. Radio East closes down.
* GBR. Liverpool. Radio Elenore moves to 1179kHz MW this month. It shares the frequency with Radio Merseywaves who take over the channel after Elenore closes for the day. Eventually Radio Merseywaves is to take over Radio Elenore completely.
…more dates if possible please?
Sep. 1985
* GBR. London. 1188 kHz MW. Sunday afternoons. South East Sound is on air this month with rock and pop
* GBR. London. 90.9 FM. Phoenix Radio returns this month
* GBR. London. 92.0 FM. Radio Free London [RFL] is back again, with Kenny Meyers, Mike Burnett, Steve Ego and Jenny Leather. The station uses the same mailing address as Mike Burnett’s erstwhile London Rock station, and plays rock music. The station appears to be sharing the channel with the Monday only station, Imagine, which is another rock station run by Steve Martin, with DJs who have also appeared on other rock stations
* GBR. London. 92.5 FM. LWR is on air this month, 24 hours, playing soul/funk
* GBR. Colchester. 93.9 FM. Radio Freedom is launched, and soon becomes an instant success; it is comprised of five experienced DJs [Garry Lee, Jay Johnson, Debbie St. Claire, Mr. T and Ray Best] playing Top 40 music with slick presentation and snappy jingles. There is a large response, and the station broadcasts every weekend, with a 25-watt signal, that can reach up to 20 miles.
* GBR. London. 94.0 FM. In this month KJazz is on air, Sundays playing jazz
* GBR. London. 102.5 FM. Solar Radio is noted this month, 24 hours playing soul/funk
* GBR. London. 104.0 FM. London Greek Radio is on air, 24 hours.
* GBR. Guildford. 104.5 FM. Sunfire Radio is noted this month
Some of these are straightforward enough, get a calendar from timeanddate.com and pick the year to add in the Sundays or whatever, but others are more hard to work out.
Sep. 1986
* GBR. Wolverhampton. 3463 kHz SW. Radio Orion starts tropical band operation, for 1 hour per night, 8-9pm.
Which nights were these please? I assume Sat or Sun but need more than an assumption 🙂
I appreciate this is a lot, and am really grateful for any assistance on any of these queries.
If anyone can help I would be very grateful indeed.
Regards to all
Bert
